Sloths are famous for being among the slowest-moving animals on land. They spend most of their time hanging from trees in tropical rainforests, moving so leisurely that algae can grow on their fur, helping them blend into their surroundings.
A Slow Digestive Process
Their slow pace isn’t just in movement—their digestion is equally sluggish. A single meal of leaves can take up to a month to fully digest due to their low metabolic rate and specialized stomach designed to break down tough plant material.
Natural Camouflage
Because they move so little, algae often grow on their fur, giving them a greenish tint. This provides excellent camouflage against predators like jaguars and harpy eagles.
Surprising Swimming Skills
Despite their sluggish land movements, sloths are strong and efficient swimmers. They can hold their breath for up to 40 minutes by slowing their heart rate, allowing them to cross rivers with ease—a surprising talent for such a slow-paced creature.
