Our Story: A New Beginning from a Rich Legacy

SWISS International Air Lines was born from a pivotal moment in Swiss aviation history. Its roots lie with Swissair, Switzerland’s former national airline, which was renowned as the “Flying Bank” for its financial stability and service excellence for decades. Swissair’s journey began in 1931 through the merger of two earlier carriers, Ad Astra Aero and Balair.

However, after a period of over-expansion and the tragic events of 9/11, Swissair faced severe financial difficulties and ceased operations in March 2002. In a remarkable display of Swiss resolve and commitment to maintaining national air connectivity, Crossair, Swissair’s regional subsidiary, was restructured and rebranded as SWISS International Air Lines. This new entity officially took to the skies on April 1, 2002, taking over most of Swissair’s routes, aircraft, and experienced personnel, ensuring a seamless continuation of Switzerland’s global air links.

In 2005, SWISS joined the Lufthansa Group, a strategic move that provided the airline with a strong financial backing and integration into one of Europe’s largest and most successful aviation groups. This acquisition allowed SWISS to strengthen its position on the global stage while preserving its unique Swiss identity and commitment to premium service.

Leadership and Ownership

SWISS International Air Lines AG is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, operating as a key airline within the broader Lufthansa Group.   • Airbus A220 (A220-100 and A220-300): These state-of-the-art, highly fuel-efficient regional jets are a cornerstone of our short- and medium-haul fleet, providing exceptional comfort and a quiet cabin, particularly important for routes within Europe.
