As the national flag carrier of Switzerland, SWISS International Air Lines (SWISS) embodies the values that define its home country: precision, reliability, and unparalleled hospitality. We connect Switzerland with the world, offering a premium travel experience marked by attentive service, quality products, and a distinctly Swiss charm.
Our Story: A New Beginning from a Rich Legacy
SWISS International Air Lines was born from a pivotal moment in Swiss aviation history. Its roots lie with Swissair, Switzerland’s former national airline, which was renowned as the “Flying Bank” for its financial stability and service excellence for decades. Swissair’s journey began in 1931 through the merger of two earlier carriers, Ad Astra Aero and Balair.
However, after a period of over-expansion and the tragic events of 9/11, Swissair faced severe financial difficulties and ceased operations in March 2002. In a remarkable display of Swiss resolve and commitment to maintaining national air connectivity, Crossair, Swissair’s regional subsidiary, was restructured and rebranded as SWISS International Air Lines. This new entity officially took to the skies on April 1, 2002, taking over most of Swissair’s routes, aircraft, and experienced personnel, ensuring a seamless continuation of Switzerland’s global air links.
In 2005, SWISS joined the Lufthansa Group, a strategic move that provided the airline with a strong financial backing and integration into one of Europe’s largest and most successful aviation groups. This acquisition allowed SWISS to strengthen its position on the global stage while preserving its unique Swiss identity and commitment to premium service.
Leadership and Ownership
SWISS International Air Lines AG is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, operating as a key airline within the broader Lufthansa Group. This ownership structure provides SWISS with the benefits of scale, shared resources, and a robust global network, while enabling it to maintain its distinct brand, operational independence, and focus on its Swiss market.
The airline’s strategic direction and daily operations are guided by an experienced management team. Mr. Jens Fehlinger serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), leading SWISS in its commitment to operational excellence, customer satisfaction, and sustainable growth.
Our Fleet: Modernity, Comfort, and Swiss Efficiency
SWISS operates a modern and diverse fleet, carefully chosen for optimal performance, passenger comfort, and environmental efficiency across its varied network. Our passenger fleet primarily includes:
- Boeing 777-300ER: These long-haul wide-body aircraft are the flagship of our fleet, deployed on key intercontinental routes. They offer a premium experience across all classes, including our acclaimed First Class, Business Class (with full-flat beds), and Economy Class.
- Airbus A330-300: These versatile wide-body aircraft serve a mix of long-haul and medium-haul international routes, providing comfort and reliability.
- Airbus A340-300: Though older, these aircraft have been significantly refurbished to continue offering a comfortable experience on some long-haul routes.
- Airbus A320 Family (A319, A320ceo/neo, A321ceo/neo): These narrow-body jets form the backbone of our extensive European network. The newer A320neo and A321neo variants offer enhanced fuel efficiency and a quieter cabin experience.
- Airbus A220 (A220-100 and A220-300): These state-of-the-art, highly fuel-efficient regional jets are a cornerstone of our short- and medium-haul fleet, providing exceptional comfort and a quiet cabin, particularly important for routes within Europe.
SWISS consistently invests in fleet modernization, ensuring that passengers experience the highest levels of safety and comfort. Beyond passenger operations, SWISS operates Swiss WorldCargo, its dedicated air freight division, utilizing both its own cargo capacity and the belly-hold capacity of its passenger aircraft to transport goods globally.
Connecting Switzerland to the World: Our Multi-Hub System
With its primary global hub at Zurich Airport (ZRH), and a significant presence at Geneva Airport (GVA), SWISS offers excellent connectivity through its two-hub strategy:
- Zurich Airport (ZRH): As the largest and main hub, Zurich provides extensive long-haul and European connections, serving as a vital gateway between Switzerland and the rest of the world.
- Geneva Airport (GVA): Located in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, Geneva serves as a strong secondary hub, particularly for regional and European destinations, catering to the specific needs of its surrounding international community.
From these modern and efficient hubs, SWISS offers:
- Extensive European Network: A dense network of direct flights to major cities and regional centers across Europe, ensuring frequent and convenient connections.
- Robust Intercontinental Reach: Direct flights to a wide array of destinations in North America, South America, Asia (including the Middle East, India, and the Far East), and Africa, providing seamless global connections for both business and leisure travelers.
This dual-hub approach provides operational flexibility and caters to the diverse travel needs of passengers originating from or connecting through Switzerland.
