As the national flag carrier of Sri Lanka, SriLankan Airlines serves as a vibrant ambassador for the island nation, connecting its rich heritage and warm hospitality to the world. From our main hub at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo, we offer a comprehensive network across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Australia, inviting travelers to experience the genuine warmth and service that defines Sri Lankan culture.
Our Story: A Journey Through Decades of Aviation
SriLankan Airlines’ lineage traces back to 1979, when Air Lanka was established as the national airline, following the cessation of operations by the original flag carrier, Air Ceylon. Air Lanka quickly began to build its network, leveraging its strategic location in the Indian Ocean to become a regional connector.
A significant chapter in the airline’s history began in 1998 when the Dubai-based Emirates Group partially acquired a stake in Air Lanka and took over its management under a ten-year strategic partnership. This period saw a major rebranding, with Air Lanka officially becoming SriLankan Airlines, adopting its current livery and focusing on modernizing its fleet and services. Under Emirates’ management, the airline aimed to enhance its international presence and service standards.
In 2008, the Government of Sri Lanka reacquired full ownership of the airline from Emirates, ending the partnership. Despite the change in management, SriLankan Airlines retained its rebranded name and logo, continuing its journey as a fully state-owned entity.
A pivotal moment for SriLankan Airlines and its global connectivity occurred on May 1, 2014, when it officially joined the oneworld alliance. This made SriLankan Airlines the first airline from the Indian subcontinent to become a full member of a major global airline alliance, significantly expanding its reach through seamless connections with leading airlines worldwide.
Today, SriLankan Airlines continues to navigate a dynamic global aviation landscape, dedicated to promoting tourism to Sri Lanka and serving as a vital link for the country’s economy. The airline is currently undergoing restructuring, with the Sri Lankan government seeking to divest a majority stake to private investors to ensure its long-term financial stability and growth.
Leadership and Ownership
SriLankan Airlines Limited is a limited liability company that is primarily owned by the Government of Sri Lanka. The Secretary to the Treasury, on behalf of the government, holds the majority shareholding. Other minor shareholders include the Employees’ Provident Fund, Peoples’ Bank, and current/past employees under an employee share ownership scheme.
As of current reports (April 2024), the Sri Lankan government is actively in the process of selling a majority stake in SriLankan Airlines to private entities as part of a broader state-owned enterprise restructuring initiative. Several local and international firms have expressed interest and submitted bids.
The airline’s Chairman is Mr. Ashok Pathirage. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is Mr. Richard Nuttall. They lead the airline’s operations and strategic direction, focusing on improving its financial performance, enhancing its network, and delivering a consistent service experience. The headquarters of SriLankan Airlines are located at Airline Centre, Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, Sri Lanka.
SriLankan Airlines also has key subsidiaries, including SriLankan Catering Limited and Air Lanka Private Limited, which are 100% owned by the company.
Our Fleet: An All-Airbus Operation
SriLankan Airlines operates an all-Airbus fleet for its mainline passenger operations, emphasizing consistency in maintenance, pilot training, and passenger experience. The airline has invested in modern variants to enhance fuel efficiency and cabin comfort. The fleet generally includes:
- Airbus A330-200/300: These wide-body aircraft serve as the backbone of SriLankan’s medium to long-haul international routes. They are primarily used for flights to Europe, Australia, and key Asian and Middle Eastern destinations.
- Airbus A320-200 / A320neo: These narrow-body aircraft are the workhorses for SriLankan’s short to medium-haul network, serving routes across the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and some Middle Eastern destinations. The A320neo variants offer improved fuel efficiency and a more modern cabin.
- Airbus A321-200 / A321neo: Larger variants of the narrow-body family, providing additional capacity on popular regional routes. The A321neo brings similar efficiency benefits as the A320neo.
SriLankan Airlines is continuously looking to optimize its fleet mix to meet operational requirements and financial goals. SriLankan Cargo leverages the belly capacity of its passenger fleet to provide air freight services.
