As the national flag carrier of South Africa, South African Airways (SAA) carries a proud legacy of connecting Africa with the world. We are dedicated to providing a distinctively African travel experience, characterized by warm hospitality, reliable service, and a commitment to showcasing the vibrant spirit of our continent.
Our Story: From Pioneering Flights to Renewed Horizons
South African Airways traces its origins back to February 1, 1934, when the South African government acquired Union Airways and rebranded it as South African Airways. This marked the official birth of SAA, which swiftly began expanding its domestic and regional routes, becoming a vital link across Southern Africa.
In the post-World War II era, SAA introduced its first intercontinental service, known as the “Springbok Service,” connecting South Africa with Europe. SAA was also a pioneer in adopting jet technology in Africa. Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, despite geopolitical challenges, SAA maintained its position as a prominent global airline, serving an extensive network.
Following the end of apartheid, SAA embarked on a significant transformation, renewing its fleet and re-establishing routes that had been curtailed. While the airline faced financial difficulties in recent years, it underwent a comprehensive business rescue process and officially restarted operations on September 23, 2021, with a leaner, more agile, and financially sustainable model. This marked a new chapter for SAA, focused on rebuilding its network and reclaiming its position as a leading African carrier.
Leadership and Ownership
South African Airways (SAA SOC Ltd.) is currently a state-owned company, 100% owned by the Government of South Africa. While there have been past discussions and attempts at partial privatization, as of the current status, the airline remains under full government control.
The airline’s strategic direction and ongoing turnaround are overseen by its leadership. Professor M. John Lamola serves as the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), leading SAA’s journey towards sustainable profitability and enhanced service delivery. The airline operates under the oversight of a Board of Directors, committed to its resurgence and long-term success.
Our Fleet: Building for the Future
South African Airways is currently in a phase of strategic fleet growth and modernization, aiming for increased efficiency and expanded capacity. Our current fleet primarily consists of:
- Airbus A330-300: These wide-body aircraft are essential for our longer-haul international routes, offering comfortable seating in both Business and Economy classes.
- Airbus A320-200: These narrow-body jets form the backbone of our domestic and regional African network, providing efficient and reliable service for shorter flights.
- Airbus A340-300: A small number of these aircraft are still in operation, primarily for longer-range routes.
SAA has ambitious plans to significantly increase its fleet size in the coming years, aiming to expand its regional footprint and re-establish a more extensive international network. This growth will involve the acquisition of additional modern and fuel-efficient aircraft to support its strategic objectives.
