Our Story: From Regional Pioneer to Global Connector
The roots of Malaysia Airlines stretch back to 1937 with the establishment of Malayan Airways Limited (MAL) in Singapore. Its first commercial flight took off in 1947, connecting Singapore to Penang via Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh, serving as a vital link within British Malaya and the surrounding regions.
With the formation of the Federation of Malaysia in 1963, the airline was renamed Malaysian Airways Limited. A few years later, following Singapore’s secession from Malaysia in 1965, the airline became Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (MSA) in 1966. This binational partnership thrived for a period, expanding its network across Asia and introducing long-haul services.
However, in 1972, MSA ceased operations, leading to the formation of two distinct national carriers: Malaysian Airline System (MAS), which later became Malaysia Airlines, and Singapore Airlines (SIA). MAS quickly embarked on an ambitious expansion, acquiring new aircraft and extending its reach internationally. In 1997, Malaysia Airlines achieved a world record with its Boeing 777-200ER, flying around the world eastward from Seattle to Kuala Lumpur and back, setting new records for the longest and fastest round-the-world flight by a commercial airliner.
Despite facing significant challenges in recent years, Malaysia Airlines underwent comprehensive restructuring under its parent company, Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), and was privatized in 2014. This strategic overhaul aimed to strengthen its financial position and redefine its role as a premier global carrier. In 2013, Malaysia Airlines proudly joined the oneworld alliance, further enhancing its global connectivity and offering seamless travel experiences with leading airlines worldwide.
Today, Malaysia Airlines stands as a symbol of Malaysian pride and resilience, continuously striving to uphold its reputation for exceptional service and a truly Malaysian experience.
Leadership and Ownership
Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB) is the principal airline subsidiary of Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG). MAG is a global aviation organization that also oversees other airlines like Firefly and MASwings, along with aviation services such as MASkargo (cargo operations), MAB Engineering, and Amal (religious pilgrimage charters).
MAG, and by extension Malaysia Airlines, is primarily owned by Khazanah Nasional Berhad, the sovereign wealth fund of the Government of Malaysia. This ownership structure emphasizes the airline’s strategic importance to the nation’s economy and its role in promoting tourism and trade.
Datuk Captain Izham Ismail serves as the Group Managing Director of Malaysia Aviation Group and CEO of Malaysia Airlines Berhad. With extensive experience as a veteran pilot and various leadership roles within the airline, he leads the company’s journey of transformation, focusing on safety, operational excellence, and delivering a world-class customer experience.
Our Fleet: Modern, Comfortable, and Efficient
Malaysia Airlines operates a modern and capable fleet, continuously investing in newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft to provide a comfortable and sustainable flying experience. The fleet is primarily composed of:
- Airbus A350-900: These advanced wide-body aircraft serve as the flagship for Malaysia Airlines’ long-haul international routes, including its premium services to London and Tokyo. They feature state-of-the-art technology, a quiet cabin, and premium seating including Business Suite (formerly First Class) and Business Class.
- Airbus A330-200/300: These versatile wide-body aircraft form a core part of the medium to long-haul international network, connecting Kuala Lumpur to destinations across Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Middle East. The airline is in the process of replacing its older A330s with the more efficient Airbus A330-900neo, with deliveries commencing in late 2024. These new A330neos feature enhanced cabin products, aligning with the A350’s premium offering.
- Boeing 737-800: These reliable narrow-body aircraft are the workhorse of Malaysia Airlines’ domestic network and its short to medium-haul international routes, primarily within Southeast Asia, India, and some parts of Australia. The airline is also introducing the new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft to modernize its narrow-body fleet.
Malaysia Airlines maintains a strong commitment to fleet renewal, ensuring passenger comfort, operational efficiency, and a reduced carbon footprint. MASkargo, the airline’s cargo division, utilizes the belly capacity of its passenger aircraft and also operates dedicated freighter aircraft to provide extensive air freight services globally.
