Ethiopian Airlines

As the national flag carrier of Ethiopia, Ethiopian Airlines stands as the largest and leading airline in Africa. We are a symbol of African excellence and progress, dedicated to connecting the continent and the world with a commitment to safety, innovation, and unparalleled African hospitality.

Our Story: A Legacy of African Aviation Pioneering

Ethiopian Airlines’ proud history began on December 21, 1945, with operations commencing on April 8, 1946. Founded with the vision of Emperor Haile Selassie I to modernize Ethiopia and connect its diverse regions, we started with a humble fleet of five C-47 aircraft. Our inaugural international flight took place in 1946, connecting Addis Ababa, Asmara, and Cairo.

From these early days, Ethiopian Airlines rapidly established itself as a pioneer in African aviation. We introduced the first jet service in Africa, acquired the continent’s first Boeing 767, Boeing 777, and were notably the first African airline to operate the Boeing 787 Dreamliner (in 2012) and the Airbus A350 XWB (in 2016), consistently leading the way in adopting advanced aviation technology.

Throughout over seven decades, Ethiopian has consistently grown, expanding its network and capabilities across all facets of the aviation industry, including cargo, MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul), aviation training, ground handling, and catering. This integrated approach has positioned Ethiopian Airlines as a truly comprehensive aviation group, driving connectivity and economic growth across Africa.

Leadership and Ownership

Ethiopian Airlines Group is a state-owned corporate entity, wholly owned by Ethiopian Investment Holdings, the sovereign wealth fund of the Government of Ethiopia. This public ownership underscores the airline’s strategic role as a national asset and a key driver for Ethiopia’s economic development and its vision for pan-African connectivity.

The airline’s ambitious “Vision 2035” strategic plan aims to make Ethiopian Airlines one of the top 20 most competitive and leading aviation groups globally. The Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Mr. Mesfin Tasew, leads the execution of this vision, focusing on expanding the network, modernizing the fleet, and enhancing customer experience. The airline also has a robust management team overseeing its various strategic business units.

Our Fleet: Young, Modern, and Environmentally Friendly

Ethiopian Airlines operates one of the youngest and most modern fleets in the industry, boasting an average age of less than five years. This commitment to a state-of-the-art fleet ensures superior safety, comfort, and environmental efficiency. Our diverse fleet includes:

  • Wide-body Aircraft: A robust fleet of Airbus A350-900XWB, Airbus A350-1000, Boeing 787 Dreamliner (787-8 and 787-9), Boeing 777-200LR, and Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. These ultra-modern jets are the backbone of our extensive international and intercontinental routes, featuring premium cabin products that offer enhanced comfort and in-flight entertainment.
  • Narrow-body Jet Aircraft: A large fleet of Boeing 737-700NG, Boeing 737-800, and Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. These efficient single-aisle jets serve our vast African and regional networks, ensuring high frequency and reliability.
  • Regional Aircraft: A significant number of Bombardier Dash 8-400 (Q400) turboprop aircraft, vital for connecting numerous domestic and shorter regional destinations across Africa.
  • Cargo Fleet: A dedicated and growing fleet of Boeing 777-200LRF and Boeing 737-800F freighters, making Ethiopian Airlines Africa’s largest cargo operator and a significant global air freight provider.

Ethiopian’s continuous investment in advanced aircraft highlights its dedication to operational excellence and sustainable growth.

Connecting Africa and the World: Our Unparalleled Network

With our main hub at Bole International Airport (ADD) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Ethiopian Airlines has built the most extensive network in Africa. We are committed to “Bringing Africa Together and Beyond,” offering unmatched connectivity:

  • Vast African Network: Serving over 60 cities across the African continent, Ethiopian Airlines has created a crucial missing link, connecting African nations like no other airline. This dense intra-Africa network includes daily and more frequent flights, often with minimal layovers in Addis Ababa.
  • Extensive Global Reach: Direct flights to over 125 international passenger and cargo destinations across Europe, North America, South America, Asia, and the Middle East. Addis Ababa’s strategic geographic location makes it the ideal gateway for connecting travelers between Africa and the rest of the world.

Our strategic partnerships with regional airlines like ASKY and Malawian Airlines further extend our reach within Africa.
