As the flag carrier of Belgium, Brussels Airlines is dedicated to providing a distinctively Belgian travel experience, connecting our home base in Brussels to a vast network of destinations across Europe, Africa, and North America. We embody reliability, efficiency, and the warm hospitality unique to Belgium.
Our Story: A Phoenix from Aviation History
Brussels Airlines’ lineage is deeply rooted in Belgium’s rich aviation history, particularly drawing from the legacy of Sabena, Belgium’s former national airline. Following Sabena’s unfortunate bankruptcy in 2001, a group of investors established SN Brussels Airlines (SNBA) in 2002 to ensure continued air connectivity for Belgium.
A pivotal moment occurred in 2006 when SN Brussels Airlines merged with the Belgian leisure carrier Virgin Express. This amalgamation led to the creation of the new Brussels Airlines, which officially commenced operations on March 25, 2007. This merger allowed the airline to combine SNBA’s full-service network and African expertise with Virgin Express’s focus on efficient, point-to-point European travel.
In 2009, a significant strategic step was taken when the Lufthansa Group acquired a 45% stake in Brussels Airlines. This partnership progressively deepened, and in January 2017, Lufthansa Group acquired the remaining shares, making Brussels Airlines a full member of one of the world’s leading airline groups. This ownership has provided Brussels Airlines with a strong foundation, enabling continued investment in its fleet, network, and passenger experience while maintaining its unique Belgian identity.
Leadership and Ownership
Brussels Airlines SA/NV is a wholly-owned subsidiary of SN Airholding SA/NV, which in turn is 100% owned by Deutsche Lufthansa AG. This integration into the Lufthansa Group allows Brussels Airlines to benefit from synergies, shared best practices, and a robust global infrastructure, while still operating with its own distinct brand and a strong focus on its Brussels hub.
The airline’s operations and strategic development are currently led by Ms. Dorothea von Boxberg, who serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Her leadership is focused on steering Brussels Airlines towards sustainable growth, enhanced customer satisfaction, and operational excellence.
Our Fleet: Modern and Belgian-Inspired
Brussels Airlines operates a modern and efficient fleet, carefully selected to serve its diverse range of routes. Our fleet includes:
- Wide-body Aircraft: Primarily Airbus A330-300 aircraft. These long-haul jets are the workhorses of our extensive African and North American networks, offering various cabin classes including Business Class (with flatbed seats), Premium Economy, and Economy Class, ensuring comfort on longer journeys. The airline is also planning to introduce Airbus A330neo aircraft in the future for enhanced efficiency and passenger experience.
- Narrow-body Jet Aircraft: A fleet of Airbus A319, A320, and the new A320neo aircraft forms the backbone of our vast European network. These modern jets provide comfortable and reliable service for shorter flights, with an increasing focus on fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.
Our fleet often features unique “Belgian Icon” liveries, celebrating Belgian heritage through specially painted aircraft dedicated to famous Belgian figures, comics, or cultural aspects, reflecting our pride in our home country.
